Heading northbound on the N12 with the exquisite view of the four passes and the 47 picturesque bends of the Outeniqua pass you breach the summit of the pass presenting a spectacular view of the Waboomskraal Valley - a hidden paradise in the Garden Route.

Waboomskraal is one of the most diverse agricultural valleys in South Africa, boasting with mainly hops, apples, pears, plums, kiwi, strawberries, pecan- and macadamia nuts, a range of export fynbos (king proteas, pin cushions) and black truffles.

Situated approximately 4 km into the valley, 18 km from George in the Western Cape, you find the largest privately-owned hop producing farm – Kouwdouw. The name Kouwdouw is derived from the Dutch words “kouwe douwe” which means cold dew. In the late afternoon one can see how the candy floss fog like clouds enfold the mountain range like an incoming tide.

The units are individually named after our proudly cultivated local award-winning hop varieties. Kouwdouw also boasts with the third largest Perigod Black truffle orchid in SA.
